Fed Cup: France-Romania in the semifinals, Czech champions defending prematurely

France will host Romania in the Fed Cup semifinals on April 20-21, following their respective victories in Belgium (3-1) and the Czech Republic (3-2) on Sunday.

The Czech champions, title holders, they were out in the first round, having yielded Sunday in the double after a battle of nearly three hours against Romania who won 3 to 2.

Belarus, winner in Germany (4-0), will face Australia who beat the Americans in front of their audience 3 to 2 after the double.

The Czech Republic, deprived of its best player Petra Kvitova, finalist of the Australian Open, on a personal decision, led 1-0, then returned to 2-2 before the double-decisive of Sunday, finally conceded.

The Czechs, crowned six times in the last eight editions, leave the Fed Cup prematurely, after the double victory of Irina Begu and Monica Niculescu ahead of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Sinlakova 6-7 (2/7), 6-4, 6-4, after a battle of 2 hours and 53 minutes.

If the French had no difficulty in validating their ticket by leading 3-0 (before finally winning 3-1), thanks to two ghosts, Caroline Garcia and Alizé Cornet, Czechs and Romania took the advantage in turn before the double decisive.

Worn by Simona Halep in great form, the former World No. 1 having given the first two points to his country by winning his two singles, the Romanian regain the last square after a first participation in 1973.

In Asheville (North Carolina), the Americans, finalists of the 2018 edition and deprived of their stars, capitulated in the double.

Danielle Collins and Nicole Melichar lost to Australia's Ashleigh Barty and Priscilla Hon 6-4, 7-5.

Finally, in Brunswick, the Belarussians, brought by Aryna Sabalenka, N.9 world at 20, have smothered the German 4-0.
