Cycling: Froome duel against Quintana in the Andes in Colombia

Chris Froome and Nairo Quintana compete against each other on Tuesday in the Andes: the Brit begins his 2019 season by participating for the first time in the Tour of Colombia, during which he will compete with the small climber on his field.

With this race, Quintana, leader of the Movistar team, has the opportunity to shake the supremacy of Froome, leader of Team Sky and four times winner of the Tour de France. The Colombian could also take his revenge on his fellow British team, Egan Bernal, who defeated him in the first edition in 2018.

The Tour of Colombia is disputed until next Sunday in the department of Antioquia, whose capital is Medellin. The course will sometimes rise to 2,600 m altitude, which should favor climbers, including the "beetle" Colombian as nicknamed Nairo Quintana.

"It's a race that ends in the mountains and there is going to be a show," said Movistar leader, winner of the Giro in 2017 and Vuelta in 2016, the sports newspaper Marca.

Froome will start there a season whose main objective is to take for the fifth time the yellow jersey of the Tour de France.

"It's a good place: there is altitude and we can prepare ourselves for the goals of the year," he said.

Quintana has already started his season with the Tour de San Juan, Argentina, where he finished eighth.

Runners of 30 nationalities participate in this second edition of the Tour of Colombia, endorsed by the International Cycling Union (UCI), including the Spaniards Marc Soler, Oscar Sevilla and Jonathan Castroviejo, and the Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe.

The first stage will be a 14 km team time trial in Medellin, and the other five with first- to fourth-category passes.

The last stage, on February 17, will be 173.8 km long with arrival at Alto Las Palmas, first class pass.
